Legacy of Tikkun Poster

An inmate with a swastika tattooed on his hand greeted us as we stepped off the bus outside the San Quentin prison. As 17 year old counselors-in-training (CITs) at UAHC Camp Swig in the summer of 1975, that experience - organized by camp staff and human rights advocates - made some of us think about the death penalty; others thought about liberty; some were inspired; still others were traumatized. We each stepped outside of our own lives that day, and in to a much larger world.

Lo Alecha Haml'cha Ligmor

Swig CIT 75; Creators of Legacy of Tikkun Our CIT class reunited in August 2020 and discovered that many of us felt a desire to reconnect with the inspiration camp gave us in our youth. We recalled how Camp Swig planted some seeds of understanding: the world is bigger than each of us; it is unfinished; there are people who are connected to each other and who are working to heal and repair the world. For many of us, it was at Camp Swig that Tikkun Olam (repair of the world) became more than a phrase. Our reflections led us to think about how important it is for young people to have opportunities to develop their own relationship to moral action.

That August reunion gave birth to Legacy of Tikkun, an online speakers series featuring camp alumni who can share the ways camp influenced their moral commitments and the ways those commitments are expressed in their life and career choices.
